Why did my drivers side window shatter when I shut the door?

I was at school and I had my drivers side window in my 97 neon rolled down almost all of the way and when i got out of the can and shut, not slammed, the door, the window completely shattered. Why did this happen?

sometimes things like that just happen for no reason and you were the lucky recipient.
